LIVE STREAMING WITH WORSHIP BAND IN HAND

After the situation with the virus in 2020, many churches were propelled to start live streaming their services for the first time, if they weren't already doing so. We've all been expanding our skills and learning new ways to engage. There's never been a better time to use tracks (create an account and download the app at no cost with a free song to try it out yourself).

Luckily, Worship Band in Hand makes it easy, and our partners who provide tracks have made a clear path for you to obtain licensing to stream with the recordings on Worship Band in Hand. Read on for licensing info and learn how to connect audio from Band in Hand to your stream.

There are two parts that need licensing– one is the songs themselves (publishing/admin) which makes sure songwriters get paid. That is covered by a CCLI Streaming License. If you already have a CCLI license for your regular worship services, streaming provisions can be added on if you contact them. For a church of 200 people, this license is under $90 for an entire year.

Once that is covered, you need to license the actual "master recordings" used through the Worship Band in Hand app. Our typical license only includes regular in-person church services to use the recordings within our app, per the terms of our negotiated contracts with the various track producers who provide recordings for Worship Band in Hand. That's how we are able to keep the cost down to $11.99 per track.

However, because of the circumstances in 2020, many of our producers have been extremely flexible to help churches live stream more easily. Some terms may change with certain vendors, but a few have provided gratis live stream licensing opportunities so you can stream with your tracks for no additional charge!

HOW TO STREAM WITH TRACKS AND OTHER INPUTS

There are a few approaches you could take to doing a simple live stream with your tracks. Of course, for the most simple setup, you could always play like normal with an actual speaker in the room, and let your phone or camera pickup the room audio. But let's take a look at an inexpensive (or free if you already have these items) way to stream with direct audio.

The first option would be to stream from your smartphone directly to Facebook or Youtube live. To do this, you'll need an adapter to get the audio feed from your audio mixer into your phone, like this one. You'd run your microphones or instruments AND your Band in Hand audio into your mixer, then run the main mix out to your adapter (for Iphones, possibly also through a 3.5mm headphone jack to lightning adapter), into your phone. You'd then run the auxiliary output (aux mix) into a headphone amp to your in-ears or headphones.

The reasoning for using the aux mix for your headphones in this scenario is so that you can feed the click track from Band in Hand to your headphones only, while you send the main mix without the click track to be live-streamed. If you have a nicer mixer with the capability to route an aux mix to the mixer's internal headphone jack, or maybe you could use the main mix routed through the headphone jack and the aux mix for your live stream, you wouldn't have to use a headphone amp.

As long as you separate your mixes where you only hear the click in your headphones, you're good to go!

The second option you have would be to use a free streaming program on your computer like OBS. Then you could use a USB audio interface to bring your microphone, instrument, and Band in Hand inputs into the computer, and digitally feed OBS from the audio interface. (If you don't have an interface but do have a small soundboard as pictured, you could run it directly into the microphone input on your computer's sound card, as another option). You'd then need a simple webcam, video capture card and camera as an input, or an iPhone to use as a camera in OBS. With the features of OBS, you can use the audio from your interface or mixer wired into your microphone jack, and the video from your camera. OBS even allows you to "delay" the audio feed by a certain amount of milliseconds, to make sure it is in sync with your video.
